Disability Sports Association of Vojvodina

The Disability Sport Association of Vojvodina was founded under the name Vojvodina Association for Sport and Recreation of Persons with Disabilities, at the proposal of the Initiative Committee at the session held on 5 September 1965 in Bela Crkva.

The sports activity of wartime and peacetime disabled veterans dates back to 1953, when the first disability sport commissions were formed with the task to work on the development and popularization of sports among people with disabilities, in contribution to their recreation. In the following period, until the Association was founded in 1965, sport activities of wartime and peacetime disabled veterans have grown significantly and have become an integral part of regular activities.

In the period before the founding of the Association, numerous competitions and meetings were held in various sports disciplines and notable results were achieved in the sphere of psycho-physical recreation of wartime and peacetime disabled veterans. Labour disabled workers, the blind and partially sighted and other people with disabilities subsequently joined in sports activities.

Accordingly, the best solution for further successful work on the recreation of people with disabilities in Vojvodina was the establishment of the Association for Sport and Recreation of Persons with Disabilities, which would bring together all interested persons, with a view of achieving the best possible results in the framework of the Association of Physical Culture Organizations of Vojvodina.

The decision to form the Association as a specific, independent sports organization in the framework of the Association of Physical Culture Organizations of Vojvodina was made at the inaugural meeting. The name of the Association for Sport and Recreation of Persons with Disabilities of Vojvodina was changed to Disability Sport Association of Vojvodina on 29 January 1996, and in 1997 it was transformed into the Association of organizations in the field of sports with the status of a citizen’s association.

The Disability Sport Association of Vojvodina gathers people with disabilities from the territory of AP Vojvodina, regardless of their gender, age and disability category, who can and want to engage in sports and recreational activities. Currently, the Association gathers 12 members, and the office of president is discharged by Milorad Kilibarda.

In previous years, the Association achieved notable results, and contestants from Vojvodina, as team members or individuals, who contested within the Association for Sport and Recreation of Persons with Disabilities of Yugoslavia and the Association for Sport and Recreation of Persons with Disabilities of Serbia, achieved top results in table tennis, sitting volleyball, goalball, athletics, shooting sport. In recognition of top results they achieved, a large number of people with disabilities received national awards.
